ABSTRACT

ENSO Events during the 1990s Anomalously warm conditions prevailed during the 1990s in the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean. The El Nino that developed in 1991 lasted nearly continuously through 1995 and reappeared at record-breaking levels in 1997, following a moderate La Nina in 1995/96. Climate conditions in southern Africa over this period contributed to a series of disasters and disaster responses.
