ABSTRACT

The purpose of understanding the difference between the pre-war period and the period succeeding the October Revolution, from the point of view of the structure of grain production in general, and of the production of marketable grain in particular. Industry is growing; the number of workers is increasing; towns are spreading; and, finally, the regions producing industrial crops and which create a demand for marketable grain, are expanding. All these factors lead to a rapid increase in the demand for grain, for marketable grain, whereas the production of marketable grain is increasing at a tragically slow rate. The basis of our grain difficulties lies in the fact that the increase in the production of marketable grain in our country is proceeding at a slower pace than the increase in the demand for grain. The solution lies in the transition in agriculture from individual peasant farming to collective, to communal farming.
