ABSTRACT

Information technology plays an essential role in the daily operation of every large enterprise. Business executives routinely reference their company’s IT capabilities as a source of competitive advantage. They sponsor strategic initiatives that leverage IT in new and different ways to grow revenues or expand profits. Even the august Wall Street Journal recognized the intrinsic importance of technology by renaming its “Marketplace” news section “Business & Technology” in 2015. In the face of such widespread business agreement about the importance of IT, why are so many IT organizations incapable of launching major technology initiatives that would clearly benefit their companies?
