ABSTRACT
This chapter is about vocabulary processes and, in particular, vocabulary acquisition processes. Our focus is on how school children add words to their reading and writing vocabularies and how they learn the meanings of new words. The chapter on vocabulary instruction by Blachowicz and Fisher in this volume addresses methods and activities that promote vocabulary learning in the classroom. Other important word-level processes in reading are addressed in chapters on lexical and phonemic processes, word identification, and spelling.
