ABSTRACT

One of these aspects is the implementation of the augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) system across multiple settings. This chapter discusses ways to implement and integrate AAC strategies and systems across settings. The SETT model is a framework that sets up collaboration between the Student, the Environments, the Tasks, and the Tools for the implementation of AAC systems and strategies. Core vocabulary should be easily accessible to students regardless of which AAC system they are using. Fringe vocabulary consists of words that are unique to the student based on his or her needs, interests, and situations. The premise of sight words is that if a person knows these words, then it makes it easier to focus on learning other words when reading. The community setting is comprised of multiple locations the student will visit. The curriculum covers content from pre-readiness math skills, numbers, math operations, and measurement, to more advanced skills such as algebra and geometry.
