ABSTRACT

This chapter examines a news media story and an editorial in the British press that cover different perspectives of the European refugee crisis. We find that using the Transformative Journalism Model helps reveal ways to improve news media coverage of Islam and Muslims. In this chapter, we reveal how context and facts are critical for various publics to understand and engage with the issues. However, the crisis (its causes and its manifestations) are inherently complex. In this case, not getting the facts right undermines an editorial focus on trying to bring a dose of humanity to a divisive subject.
