ABSTRACT

In this chapter we use the Transformative Journalism Model to analyse two news media reports published in the British press involving Muslims and terrorism. Researchers have already laid bare the problematic ways Islam and Muslims are portrayed in the British press. On its tenth anniversary, we selected stories about the attacks that targeted Glasgow International Airport. Neither story is overtly Islamophobic or problematic. We find the model valuable in identifying not only the subtler ways Muslims are ‘othered’ but also ways journalists can use it to guide their reportage.
