ABSTRACT

Chapter 8 covers anger, which, it is argued, is a relatively neglected emotion in clinical practice. There is relatively little research or literature on anger, and many adolescents and young adults struggle to access help specifically tailored for difficulties with anger. The first part of this chapter explores what causes anger, what it is, and its function. The idea that anger is often functional is important given societal beliefs about anger as ‘toxic’ or ‘harmful’. The chapter then goes on to explain the anger trap, a cognitive behavioural formulation of anger difficulties. The trap is then used to explain the cognitive-behavioural interventions available to help adolescents and young adults to move out of the anger trap.
