ABSTRACT

Even though, ethnocide is the product of being detained for several years in refugee detention camps, several macro factors, not immediately related to the day to day living conditions of the camps also contribute toward this process. This includes the cultural history of Vietnam, general socio-political conditions in Vietnam, specific factors contributing to the asylum seekers’ escape from the country, the process of escape. This chapter discusses and explains some of such factors . In addition, it also presents a brief overview of Vietnamese history and culture. Macro factors, which may have directly contributed to the decision of the asylum seekers to escape Vietnam, have been discussed along with the process of flight and the experience en route to the ‘first asylum country’.
