ABSTRACT

The overall situation in the detention centres was like a time bomb ticking slowly. The inhuman duration of administrative detention and a combination of factors like mandatory and forced repatriation of the ‘screened out’ asylum seeker led to senseless violence and consequent loss of human lives. Violence within the camps was often an indication of the level of frustration of the detainees and a symptom of stress. This chapter elaborates the various aspects of violence in the camps, which is presented as the cause and consequence of the process of ethnocide in the detention centres.
