ABSTRACT
High unemployment, particularly in Continental Europe, cannot be dismissed as the outcome of antisocial behaviour or individual pathologies. Instead, the previous chapter showed that the employment society is running out of employment. Labour supply seriously outstrips labour demand. One possible solution, namely a return to the Victorian ‘upstairs-downstairs’ society, is seen as outdated and unfit for the 21st century. However, unemployment must be tackled and this chapter will introduce three different proposals: ecological taxation, measures to ensure a different distribution of employment and basic income. The compilation makes no claim to being exhaustive but preference has been given to proposals which favour fundamental change over piece-meal ‘business-as-usual’ solutions.
