ABSTRACT

This chapter will discuss nuclear power as an option that may satisfy increasing demands for energy. It will consider such aspects of nuclear energy as its ability to supplement dwindling fossil fuel resources, its special ability to generate electrical energy, its possible environmental desirability, its safety aspects, and its potential for nuclear weapons proliferation through the production of weapons-and reactor-grade fissile material. These issues will be evaluated for three categories of countries: developed, developing, and less-developed countries.
