ABSTRACT

Despite the propaganda war waged by Egypt's Sawt al-'Arab radio station and the belligerent mood in Jordan at the time of the crisis, Wasfi al-Tall offered to give a lecture at the Arab Club in Amman, to explain the advantages of the Baghdad Pact to Jordan. The propaganda war between them came to an end in June 1960; Jordan officially recognized the Iraqi republican regime on 1 October; and on 1 December King Husayn appointed Wasfi al-Tall as Jordan's ambassador to Iraq. The ambassadors in Baghdad and Amman met with the prime ministers and other ministers, joint committees met, an Iraqi Trade Mission was opened in Amman, and arrangements were made for the shipment of goods to Iraq through the port of Aqaba. The following day the Iraqi Foreign Ministry recalled their ambassador to Amman, Brigadier 'Abd al-Karim Shakir, and Jordanian-Iraqi relations became strained for the first time since their renewal at the end of 1960.
