ABSTRACT

The state-owned Polish chartering and broking firm Polfracht of Gdynia emerged from the Baltica Limited Company which itself had been formed in March 1946. When the new communist government reorganised all economic activities in Poland including those of shipbroking and chartering in early 1951, Polfracht emerged to take over some of the activities and responsibilities of Baltica in addition to the other small brokers and charterers. Apart from chartering bulk cargoes, Polfracht also was involved in arranging transport for larger parcels of general merchandise and semi-bulk cargoes on a contract basis. The participation of Polfracht in the chartering of bulk tonnage in Polish ports amounted to 70" in 1959 compared with only 40" in 1956. In 1961, Polfracht's activities with respect to time chartering were particularly extensive. In 1970, the share of foreign vessels in Polfracht's chartering increased by 1" to 3,995,000 tons, and reflected a continuing increase over 1968.
