ABSTRACT

Road transport was always subordinate to the rail sector in Poland under the Communist regime as viewed in some ways as immoral. One consequence of the low priority given to road transport was that little was ever published of its activities until the late 1960s when the growth of container transport in particular, led to its emergence as a potent force. The activities of trucking in the Szczecin-Swinoujscie port complex were reviewed in 1972 and formed the basis of the first detailed analysis of the industry in relation to port activities, that had ever been carried out. Coal terminals should be equipped with appliances for de-freezing coal in wagons as this currently caused the ports considerable difficulties - hot air tunnels or infra-red heaters would be suitable. The routing of cargo should first cover the carriage of export coal from the Slask mines in the south to the ports and sulphur to the Siarkopol Terminal in Gdansk.
