ABSTRACT

In the first counseling session, Socratic counselors should greet their clients in whatever way is genuine and natural for them to start building rapport. After this, the counselor should communicate the plan for the session. Setting an initial plan for the session should be a relatively quick process with a goal of communicating to the client that the Socratic counselor has a purpose for each session as well as allowing the client to feel as if he or she is a significant part of the counseling process. After the client presents his or her main problem or most pressing issue, a Socratic counselor will go through the process of Socratic questioning to help the client identify any faulty thinking. Before embarking on this part of the counseling process, Socratic counselors need to explain their form of question to their clients and answer any questions they might have.
