ABSTRACT

This chapter takes counselors beyond the basics of Socratic method, and delves into the philosophical groundwork of the various kinds of inborn knowledge Socratic counselors can help clients extract. The role of the Socratic counselor consists in directing a client through self-reflection in order to arrive at the truth. When working with any and all spiritual cases, a Socratic counselor must begin with the first part of the Socratic process, which is the understanding that moral law is imprinted in a client's conscience, and moral law orders people to live justly. Socratic counselors using Saint Augustine's views must understand that God does show Himself right away to someone but uses the knowledge inscribed in one's soul to expose this information. This process requires a spiritual journey, which then leads to the desire of one to have a union with God.
