ABSTRACT

Chapter 5 is dedicated to the institutional description of the Environment and Security Initiative (ENVSEC), containing the basic structure, the roles of the (associated) partner organizations, the description of the foci and projects, the donors, and the regions of implementation. The chapter furthermore studies how ENVSEC presents itself, and provides insights into the evolution, the theoretical background of ENVSEC, its weakness, strengths, future aims and the geopolitical interests. The analysis is carried out on the basis of an extensive document analysis and semi-structured interviews for the period from 2001 until 2014. Moreover, the presented environmental security conception by ENVSEC is described, which mainly defines itself as a participatory, open and interpretable frame.
