ABSTRACT

A new m ovem ent, a new beauty The new movement in Dutch architecture could not define itself by what it did not want; it had to have an idea of what it did want. The young set’s growing desire for the new and their realization that the days of conventional architecture were over were shared by the older architects who were setting out afresh, such as Ed Cuypers, Jan de Kruyff, Frederik van Gendt of De Opmerker, Jacob Klinkhamer, G. van Arkel (1858-1918), J. Verheul and Bram Salm. All were aided by a tremendous creative energy that was generated both at home and abroad as hitherto unknown architectural realities were discovered, such as the vernacular in England, le réalisme in France and die Sachlichkeit in Germany and Vienna.
