ABSTRACT

At Burleigh-house, aged 69, Brownlow 9th Earl of Exeter. He was born Sept. 21, 1725; and succeeded his father and namesake 1754. He was elected M.P. for Stamford 1747; and likewise for the county of Rutland; and made his election for the latter, which he was chosen to represent again, 1754; and appointed lord-lieutenant and custos-rotulorum Sept. 1752. He was a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries, and of the Royal Society of London; and married, July 14, 1749, Letitia, sole daughter and heiress of the Hon. Horatio Townshend, one of the commissioners of Excise, and third son of Horatio Viscount T.; but by her, who died April 17, 1755, had no issue. He is succeeded in his estate and title by his brother’s son, Henry Cecil, who married, May 23, 1776, Emma, sole daughter and heir of Thomas Vernon, of Hanbury, co. Worcester, esq. by whom he had a son, Henry Vernon Cecil (who died an infant), and from whom he has been since divorced - He bore a long illness with the utmost of fortitude and resignation. Few men excelled him in the duties of private life. He was a sincere Christian; his charities were such as became that character; and his loss will be lamented by all who had the honour of his acquaintance. With tears of affection the town of Stamford may lament the loss of their best and truest friend. His kindness and civility to the inhabitants, and his benefactions to that town, will be ever remembered with the utmost gratitude. If there are such things in this world as goodness of heart and loveliness of disposition, this Nobleman possessed them in the highest degree. His excellent temper and happy frame of mind were accom panied by every social and private virtue. His benevolence was great and exemplary.
