ABSTRACT

This chapter is designed to aid the law enforcement community in understanding and defining terrorism, terrorist activity, and potential threats. Terrorist activity is designed to make a statement. Political terrorism has often been seen as a left-wing movement that virtually faded away in the United States after the 1970s. Incidents of ecological terrorism are sometimes reported publicly as random acts of destruction and are seldom seen as having an underlying agenda or cause. Agricultural terrorism, or agroterrorism, is a relatively new form of terrorism that has many potential deadly scenarios. Narco-terrorism, or narcotic-related terrorism, is performed to further the aims of drug traffickers. Biological or chemical terrorism has received much media attention in recent years largely due to its association with weapons of mass destruction. Cyberterrorism provides terrorists with the ability to operate in distant locations and to gain access to identities and financial records anywhere in the world.
