ABSTRACT

Since the communitarians who are the focus of attention in this work make their case, to some extent, by denying what liberalism affirms, some sense of liberal theory is required. It is important to distinguish between the two forms of liberalism because different communitarians target different forms of liberalism in their efforts to convey their notion of community and an understanding of that notion requires an awareness of what it is that is being criticised. An understanding of the nature of praxis provides the communitarians with a further argument to support the case that selves are not antecedently individuated. The communitarians have been engaged in two complementary yet distinct activities. The first activity has been a critique of existing society as they perceive it to be. The second activity has been the development of an alternative vision not only of what community is and does but also of what it should be and should do.
