ABSTRACT

The forms of association identified by Sartre are the series, the group-in-fusion, the pledged group, organisation and institution. These are located within society as a whole and function under the aegis of the State. These forms of association will be seen to be accompanied by particular terms of association and that the one is supportive of the other. The Sartrean analysis of the constituting and constituted nature of associations will begin to illustrate the nature of the relationship between the individual and the community. The form of association that is to be examined in this chapter, the one that Sartre examines first, is the series. The series is a form of association that is marked by a reciprocity of isolation. The reciprocity indicates that this isolation does not just happen, it has to be achieved. The achievement is a reflection of those competitive terms, the various manifestations of which are also examined in the chapter.
