ABSTRACT
Much legal scholarship begins its life as a critique, typically of some other scholar, rather than as an explanation or a prediction. This is particularly true of conflicts, and in this chapter we shall see the succession of critiqueinspired theorisations of choice of law that have been offered. To begin, we first study the nature of conflicts, so that we can offer a perspective on the values underlying private international law.
