ABSTRACT

This chapter describes how the present study was carried out in order to address the specific aims of the research. Elderly people on discharge from hospital to their own homes were the subjects of this research. It was also considered essential to gain the views of front line workers who are in daily contact with elderly people and have some bearing on the discharge process. The chapter explores the methodologies selected, designed and utilised, the sampling procedures undertaken, the logistics of administering the research tools and the analysis performed. It presents all aspects of the research process and the rationale for the selection of the various approaches. This chapter highlights the importance of ethical considerations and of carrying out a comprehensive pilot study. Pilot studies were carried out in order to assess the extent to which the required data would be collected. Ethical dilemmas will arise in any research involving human subjects.
