ABSTRACT

The term ‘sustainability’ can be used to mean a number of things and covers issues in addition to minimising both carbon dioxide production and the use of virgin resources. However, the issues are generally not covered explicitly in specifications and, when they are, the requirements involve recipe-type restrictions rather than the measurement of a property. Nevertheless, within a world that is becoming more conscious of the limitations of most resources and the damage that man has been doing to the environment, the issues do need to be considered in specifications. Therefore, several that should be considered are discussed briefly here.
