ABSTRACT
Empirical evidence highlights the variability in parental discipline strategies, as well as the differential impact such practices have on child temperament and behavior problems. This chapter addresses relations between parental discipline strategies, toddler temperament, and behavior problems. Results confirmed that power-assertive discipline strategies were uniformly related to high child Negative Affectivity, externalizing and total problems, whereas inductive strategies were linked to high Effortful Control. The search for cultural specificity revealed that relations between parental disciplinary strategies and child outcomes were consistent across different cultures for certain strategies, but not others.
