ABSTRACT

Several contributors to the memorial book pointed out that the widespread opposition to taking revenge is based on a misreading of the biblical injunction. This chapter constitutes an attempt, albeit of a very preliminary nature, to draw attention to the dilemma created by failing to apply justifications offered for others to oneself. Like the analysis of terrorist propaganda, it is based on the writings of a right-wing group that advocates the use of violence to further its political ends. The centrality of the revenge motif indicates the extent to which Goldstein's supporters were concerned about the threat of Arab violence. The major struggle is therefore the culture war between those who are prepared to accept 'the complete yoke of Judaism' and those who are intent on assimilating and 'being like all the other nations'. The chapter seeks to explain how Goldstein's admirers were, in fact, engaged in two battles simultaneously.
