ABSTRACT

This chapter provides information on coping effectiveness training (CET) for athletes and understanding the principles behind this training. It contains information on: a definition of stress, neuroendocrine responses to stress, a definition of coping, the coping and sports performance relationship, the coping functions, coping interventions, a definition of coping effectiveness, coping effectiveness training theory and developing a CET intervention. Stress is associated with a variety of symptoms such as increased blood pressure, heart rate, respiration rate, and perspiration. A meta-analysis revealed that coping is associated with sports performance. Coping can be classified as problem-focused, emotion-focused, or avoidance coping. CET may improve how an athlete copes with stress, and involves athletes being taught how to use different coping strategies, appraisal training, and seek social support. The chapter presents some practice exam questions, critical thinking questions and case study questions related to coping effectiveness training.
