ABSTRACT

This chapter provides coaches with information regarding how they can help their athletes become more mindful and thus relax better in pressurised situations. In particular, it provides: a definition of mindfulness, a conceptual model: the 3 axioms of mindfulness (attention, attitude, and intention), the benefits of mindfulness training and mindfulness techniques like meditation body scan, caring thoughts, breathing ladder, and acceptance. According to Bishop, mindfulness involves the self-regulation of awareness in regard to momentary mental states and mental processes. Within sport, Moen reported that a mindfulness training intervention positively impacted on burnout, anxiety, and performance. Mindfulness training can produce many biological and psychological benefits. Mindfulness training also enhanced attention and performance among national level swimmers. A crucial aspect of mindfulness training is awareness or attention on moment-to-moment observations. The chapter also outlines practice exam questions, critical thinking questions and case study questions related to mindfulness-based stress reduction training.
