ABSTRACT

This chapter provides information on how coaches can use questionnaires to gather information about their athletes. Information is provided on: advantages and disadvantages of questionnaires, uses of questionnaires and questionnaires that coaches can use. An advantage of questionnaires is that they are generally quick to complete, which is important for coaches who have little time. A limitation of questionnaires is that they do not allow athletes to explain their answers or document their experiences. Coaches can use questionnaires to assess the extent to which an athlete might be afflicted by a condition and the strategies athletes may use. There is an array of questionnaires, published in peer reviewed articles and books, which measure a variety of different psychological constructs in the sport literature. Also a number of questionnaires are available on the internet. Coaches should consider the quality of the questionnaire they use and where possible, they should avoid disseminating questionnaires that are not supported by published research.
