ABSTRACT

Agriculture in urban and peri-urban areas of Haryana and Uttar Pradesh plays an important role as a source of livelihood and in supplying food grains, vegetables, pulses, milk, fruits and other agricultural produce to urban and peri-urban communities and markets. Such produce from agriculture helps in supplying essential commodities in the food chain and in stabilising prices and markets and in maintaining stocks. The sphere of agriculture broadly included crop and vegetable cultivation and livestock raising. Some related issues are the role of agriculture, the nature of agricultural constraints, the impact of air pollution on health status and quality of life and the support systems for addressing the problems of the farmers. There is enough room for widely divergent perspectives of both the relationships between pollution and damage to agriculture and the risks involved. The chapter provides a synthesis picture of the villages covered under field study at Varanasi and Faridabad.
