ABSTRACT

Alternative modes of travel include transit, paratransit, ridesharing, bicycling, walking, and even more exotic modes of travel. Exotics include current and future versions of advanced technologies. Paratransit is a broad term used to describe ali those modes of public transportation that are not quite what one expects when thinking of transit in its most traditional sense. The complexity of travel behavior is amply demonstrated by trip chaining before, during, and after work. The occasionai unanticipated need for personal vehicles during or after work and unexpected overtime at work can serve as major obstacles to carpool formation. A vanpool is a private ridesharing arrangement with not less than seven nor more than fifteen participants. Vanpools are exempt from public utility regulations in most states. License and insurance requirements are stricter for public carriers such as private taxi and bus operators. Vanpool drivers must have excellent safety records and require some limited special training.
