ABSTRACT

Alternative hours of travel include staggered shifts, flexible hours, compressed weeks, and telecommunications substitution for travel. Alternative hours differ from alternative modes of travel in that the focus is on land use and related activities rather than transportation and travel behavior. The voluntary adoption of alternative hours of travel may be of benefit to individuals, organizations, or to society as a whole. Motorista typically do not recognize the full social cost of traveling during congested time periods. Alternative modes and hours of travel work well separately, but rarely together. Ridesharing is designed for ordinary people with regular jobs, standard work schedules, and predictable hours. Modem flexible hours programs seek to limit flexibility in ways that are conducive to office coverage and employee supervision, while retaining those aspects of the program that are most satisfying to employees. One basic mie is that every department should have at least one person present to pick up the telephone during normal business hours.
