ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses "Mental Illness and Criminalness Awareness" treatment module which facilitates criminal justice involved persons with mental illness (CJ-PMI)'s understanding and recognition of their psychiatric symptomatology and criminal propensity that impacts their mental health and prosocial functioning. The principles guiding the "Mental Illness and Criminalness Awareness" treatment module are consistent with principles of psychosocial rehabilitation and the principles of Need and Responsivity from the Risk-Need-Responsivity model of corrections treatment. The "Mental Illness and Criminalness Awareness" module includes eight sessions to educate participants about mental illness, symptoms associated with mental illness, symptoms of criminalness, mechanisms for seeking help, and relapse prevention strategies. The first session of the module provides an overview of the module including learning goals, review participant goals, revise participant goals as necessary, and complete pre-test measures. The second session educates participants about issues related to mental illness and the Recovery Model incorporated in this program.
