ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the Substance Abuse module which facilitates criminal justice involved persons with mental illness (CJ-PMI) understanding, recognizing, and modifying their substance misuse. This module incorporates motivational interviewing techniques to facilitate change. The "Substance Abuse" module includes 10 sessions to educate participants about substance misuse, personal assessment, barriers to change, and strategies needed for change. The "Substance Abuse" module utilizes cognitive-behavioral and social learning theory to help participants utilize assessment skills to gain an understanding of their antecedent factors that lead to substance abuse and skills necessary to change their substance abuse patterns. Key skills are refusal skills. The overarching goal of this module is skill development. The primary objective of the fourth session is to educate participants about what is needed to make changes in the area of substance abuse. The primary objective of the sixth session is to challenge participants on the antecedent thoughts, habits, and environments that lead to substance use.
