ABSTRACT

The history of Southampton’s growth in population contains nothing striking like the rise of the textile towns in the early nineteenth century or the development of the great London conurbation in the twentieth. The industrial changes of last century offered Southampton no comparable stimulus or opportunity, and in the same way the shift of population in the present has brought it only a moderate increase of numbers. The figures below set forth the chief facts in its development.
