The National Liberation Council (NLC) and Its Justifications for the 1966 Coup

The National Liberation Council (NLC) that resulted from the coup consisted of eight members: Lieutenant General Joseph A. Ankrah, as the head of NLC, Colonel Emmanuel K. Kotoka, Brigadier Akwasi A. Afrifa, General Albert K. Ocran, as army officers. The police officers were Inspector General of Police John W. K. Harlley, Deputy Inspector General of Police, Bawa A. Yakubu, John E. O. Nunoo and Anthony K. Deku. The main objective of these coup makers was to remove Nkrumah from office and purge Ghanaian society of socialist ideology.
