ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book provides a detailed documentary description of the rise of state nationalism, and offers comprehensive discussion on Chinese pan-national identity. It argues that state nationalism has been unable to rally the Chinese people behind the Party-state for lack of genuine popular support. The book examines a central issue concerning the relationship between the national identity problem and democratization. By highlighting the tensions that exist between nationalism and democracy, it illustrates the tragic fate of Chinese democracy. It can be argued that democratic national identity is very 'empty' in the sense that the democratic idea and institutions are universally the same or similar, therefore they do not reflect distinctive national identity. It is hoped that the next generation of Chinese democrats can draw from the Australian experience inspiration and knowledge that will help them overcome the difficulties identified in the book.
