ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the theory of communitalism in action, as it is applied through the institutions emerging from each of the four paxes. Communitalism affirms that some aspects of capitalism, such as individual inventiveness, are worth pursuing and supporting, but such inventiveness must be put at the service of the community so that both the individual and the community prosper. The key concepts of Ewu Development Educational Multipurpose Cooperative Society are innovation and creativity and the belief that development and wealth can be attained and sustained only when they are grounded in local culture and worldview while open to modern changes. The Africa Centre for Integral Research and Development (ACIRD) seeks to assert the right of Africans to speak in their own language and metaphors. Communitalism, an indigenous theory of knowledge creation in Africa, embracing CARE-ing for self, community and society through ACIRD, hopes to set new templates for doing research in and for Africa.
