ABSTRACT

According to Yoruba mythology, Olodumare sent 401 orisa from heaven to the earth. All the sacrifices and prayers directed to the orisa are ultimately made to Olodumare. The major orisa of the Yoruba are: Ogun, Sango, Obatala, Orunmila and Esu. According to the Yoruba myth of creation, there were two stages in the creation of the human body. The first stage was the creation of the head and chest and internal organs by Obatala. The second stage was the cutting and shaping of the hands and legs by Ogun. In the cosmology of the Yoruba, Ogun, the orisa of iron and warfare, is referred to as the king of the other orisa. While the Africans accepted Christianity with its attendant western culture and education with zeal, and practise it outwardly, in times of trouble they run back to the traditional religion, which they outwardly rejected for a solution to their problems.
