ABSTRACT
T he aim of this chapter is to account as fully as possible for the literacy activities of people. Central to this goal is the notion that literacy is a conscious action. It is a personal choice with consequences for the individual and the society. Thus, literacy activities will be examined in terms of how they contribute to the personal and societal accomplishments of adults and how they are affected by educational and psychological factors in childhood.
