ABSTRACT

The humanities enable people to make sense of the complex world in which they live. Without the lens of history, geographical awareness and an appreciation for religious beliefs, it is impossible to offer informed responses to such current affairs as: climate change, human rights violations, Brexit, or Islamophobia. Local and family histories are among the most popular hobbies, enabling people to reflect upon the experiences of their ancestors and their own identities. Many also recall 'private geographies' of their childhoods – the park they played in, their first home, the street, the 'days out' and the local characters and landmarks that gave their neighbourhood meaning. In the natural world, weather and climate patterns can make a significant difference to the livelihood of farmers, the enjoyment of tourists, provision for transport, education and sport. The internet is a rich source of awesome weather images to stimulate children's interests, including tornadoes, lightning strikes, rainbows, dust storms, hurricanes, coastal fog, and glacial melts.
