ABSTRACT

The importance of making the most of our heritage has been highlighted by John Curtis, keeper of the Department of the Middle East at the British Museum. Bourdillon. H prefers to use the term 'inheritances' rather than 'heritage' because this is seen as a more precise and helpful term for teachers. It reflects the inheritances of individuals, groups and families, as well as the more general shared inheritance of Britain. Most people associate heritage with the historic environment. Officially this covers commercial and industrial buildings, historic houses, archaeological findings, country houses, gardens, townscapes and ecclesiastical buildings. The Historic Houses Association represents 1,600 privately owned castles, houses and gardens throughout the United Kingdom (UK). Many of the UK's oldest industrial buildings date back to the Industrial Revolution. In years the subject of industrial heritage has been popularised by the efforts of Fred Dibnah, a former steeplejack from Bolton. P, whose achievements are commemorated by his own heritage centre.
