ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the 'wider world' in terms of distant places, global history and world religions. In developing children's understanding of the wider world, one of the key principles is to draw attention to shared concerns across time, place and society. In short, learning about the wider world supports pupils' all-round spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. Under the terms of the 1988 Education Act, schools in England and Wales are required to promote pupils' spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. In short, learning about the wider world supports pupils' all-round spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. In essence, cultural development involves fostering pupils' awareness of beliefs, practices, lifestyles and values in a pluralistic society. Through history, geography and religious education pupils should be able to develop their questioning, think critically, weigh evidence and develop a broad and balanced worldview.
