ABSTRACT

Kia, Muli’s wife, becomes seriously ill; but Muli, lacking money, cannot pay for daily medical treatment. For over a year Kia suffers through intermittent unsuccessful modern medical treatments and home remedies until a midwife finally cures her. Kia’s greatest concern during her illness is what will happen to her son if she dies. In a moving scene, she wails as she imagines that he will be neglected.

During Kia’s illness, the wife of brother Anadi steals the ornaments of Kia and of Muli’s sister. Eventually Anadi’s wife is forced to return the ornaments, but the bitterness between Muli’s family and her remains for a long time. Muli narrated many incidents involving quarrels with Anadi’s family; I omitted all except the story of the stolen ornaments, which I shortened.
