ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book describes the scene for the workbook by providing a selected review of the interprofessional and patient/family literature related to critical care settings. It explores a range of issues such as building infrastructure, paying attention to local context, and giving patients and their families voice. The book provides a series of activities designed to assess the nature of interprofessional collaboration a critical care setting and also intervene to enhance its quality. It presents a series of activities to allow critical care staff to reflect upon their own understanding about patient/family involvement. The book also provides a range of suggestions to evaluate these activities. It describes an activity designed for critical care staff to collaboratively identify issues that affect interprofessional collaboration and patient/family member involvement.
