ABSTRACT
The structure of Indian agriculture, both of society and of the
system of production, underwent important transformations during the 19th
century. In the immediately preceding period, significant political
changes had occurred on the subcontinent-the disintegration of the Moghal
Empire and the establishment and consolidation of British imperialism.
