ABSTRACT

Among the several aspects of programmed learning that have influenced teaching it seems reasonable to single out a very general one for special mention. It is the attempt to systematize teaching. One can reasonably take 'systematize' in two senses. The first one, applying more pervasively to teaching, is the sense of taking a systematic approach: attempting to do things in logical ways, as in stating objectives and analysing teaching tasks. The other sense is that of creating teaching systems. Few teachers are likely to write programmes for publication or for general use in schools. But, then, few teachers write books. On the other hand, all teachers at some time interact with pupils and try to teach them something. Apart from the guidance the teacher who wishes to select a programme for a specific job, gives an idea of the process of programming, not only because that it gives the important aspect of programmed learning.
