ABSTRACT

Oflate her population has been increasing rapidly. It has doubled from I 872 to I 935 (34 · 8 millions to 6g · 3 millions) though the rate of increase is not very high-I • 4 to r · 5 per cent a year. 3 The birth rate has declined since rg2o, when it was 35 per I ,ooo. The number of births is now almost stationary, fluctuating a little round two millions a year. But the further decline of the death rate is assuring growth for some time to come, though with decreasing fertility its total may never reach the hundred million level. Economic pressure has been in evidence for quite a long time. Agriculture cannot be much expanded or intensified. The country must either export emigrants or industrialize herself and export goods.
